It’s a bit difficult to review this book because I’m not sure where it’s going. It seems like its own individual story mixed in with background about some of the Mass Effect 1 characters.

The story is a prequel to Mass Effect 1, but as it develops seems to take place concurrently with the events of the game. On the one hand, the story seems to initially follow Rasa, a Cerberus agent, as she investigates events on Eden Prime. Rasa eventually runs into Wrex and Ashley Williams in different capacities. We also get a flashback from Kaidan Alenko, although it’s not clear how he’ll fit into the larger story.

The first issue starts off with a great twist. It doesn’t feature any of the familiar ME characters, but Rasa’s origin story is pretty gutsy and totally went in a direction I hadn’t expected. Issue 2 continues the story of her tracking down some secret, but now she comes into contact with Wrex. Wrex is always good for some laughs and gruffness.

Unfortunately, the transitions to issues 3 and 4 aren’t exactly clear. All of the sudden, in issue 3, Rasa is a redhead and has whiter skin. The issue seems more like an excuse to show Ashley’s battle on Eden Prime. Issue 4 is even more disconnected as it’s not clear why we’re spending so much time with Kaidan and only see the main story with Rasa hinted at in the end.

It would have been nice to get a stronger thread through the entire arc. I realize that Foundations is part of an ongoing series, but these four volumes don’t tell a cohesive story. It’s still not really clear what Rasa is really looking for and if her story will have any impact on the larger ME universe – or, as I suspect, if she’s just going to be a vehicle through which the writers get to revisit more established characters.
