Fortune's Pawn -- an action packed science fiction novel.
Devi Morris has a lot of problems. And not the fun, easy-to-shoot kind either.
After a mysterious attack left her short several memories and one partner, she's determined to keep her head down, do her job, and get on with her life. But even though Devi's not actually looking for it -- trouble keeps finding her. She sees things no one else can, the black stain on her hands is growing, and she is entangled with the cook she's supposed to hate.
But when a deadly crisis exposes far more of the truth than she bargained for, Devi discovers there's worse fates than being shot, and sometimes the only people you can trust are the ones who want you dead.

I have to admit, I am very impressed that author Rachel Bach not only managed to meet the fun and excitement of the first book but also to keep the momentum going. The romance, that honestly felt tacked onto an other wise solid story in book 1, is given room to breathe here and with some surprising results. But really, the heart of the book is Devi - she is such a likeable character and you root for her the whole way as she continues tackling even bigger challenges head on.
Story: Devi is left confused - she knows the results of the last battle left her with memory holes but she really has no choice but to continue on fighting, hoping to eventually make a place for herself back home with the Devastators. But Devi now has a terrible secret, an ability gained after being bitten by one of the zombie Xith'Cal, and every single species in the universe is going to want her for it. What began with Devi protecting others will soon turn into Devi protecting herself - even at the expense of her friends on the Fool. For if she loses, death may not be the only horrific result.
Bach really upped the anti with this second book. Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen, the story went in a completely different direction (sometimes even circular!). The author kept me guessing, all the while rooting for Devi in every scenario. And unlike the first book, the romance didn't get in the way of the flow of the story as characters were forced to make very difficult decisions.
What I really like about this series is that there is no 'super bad evil villain' nor are the good guys all good. Each person is trying his best under trying situations and there is no clear right or wrong in the decisions being made.
