First off this Hard Cover is not the same as Superior Spider-Man #1 trade paperback. It reprints the contents of two trade paperbacks worth of material. Amazing Spider-Man #698 to #700 plus the new title Superior Spider-Man #1-5. Keep in mind #700 was a 104 page mega sized issue.
This is good value because in it you get in both the Hardcover and the over-sized format plus save $5 over the price of buying the two trades together.
Contents wise #698 to #700 is a vital part of the story and you learn how Otto Ottavius (Doc Ock) brain got switched into Peter Parker's body. For my taste this story seemed a little bloated as if they needed to expand it all and stretch out the story so it ended in with #700 and we wind up with a shiny new #1. Still a fun enough tale.
Things seem to really pick up with issue #1 which is the re-formation of a new Sinister Six composed of some of the lamer villains of Spider-Man's rouges gallery. Issue #2 is about old man Otto's almost pervy infatuation with Mary Jane. I won't spoil it but I was very curious how far writer Dan Slott was going to take things. In issue #3 Otto meets his old buddy from the original Sinister Six Adrian Toomis (The Vulture). It is an interesting twist as the new Spidey initially feels sympathy for Adrian but then he realizes that The Vulture has taken things too far and he loses his temper. This is really the first time readers feel some empathy for Otto. It is a great story.
Superior Spider-Man #4 and #5 are a two part-er about corporate greed and features a villain named Massacre. This is a chilling tale.
Since Amazing #700 was a giant size issues we get all the bonus material and extra covers. The postage stamp size reprints of all 700 covers I found to be a complete waste of space.
