I have used this book in its various print editions (7th Ed. right now) since the late 90's both before and after I worked for PDI (PDI's consultants are the brains behind the book).
I work in global leadership development function where I provide it as a learning resource for our executives. I have used this resource in my other roles and in tasks as diverse as executive coaching, building competency models, running development centers, as a consulting psychologist writing development and career guidance reports for executives, when looking for ideas for my own development, and when working with people to help build their individual development plans. In short, a very wide range of contexts.
The common thread for my use of this book has been for development of managers and executives or coachees against a specific a targeted behavior. Its an ideal source of ideas and content.
The competency model in the front pages (the wheel ion p. xvi) is fairly thorough and workable, with transparent terms. The contents page ios organized along these competencies, and get down to real behaviors. This model been around and stood the test of time after much validation in the field. If you follow the school of thought that most models are 80% the same, this should be a solid one to look at, and it's not dumbed-down too much to become meaningless like some have.
The SMH also uses language that is acceptable to a wide audience (unlike the quirky pseudo-American jargon sometimes found in Lominger/KF products).
