I recently became very interested in permaculture and have read at least a half dozen books on the subject. Most of the books, including Bill Mollison's epic work and the Edible Forest Gardens book, are rather dry.
I was at the book store and found this book and hadn't heard of it before (because it was published only a few weeks ago). This book is the most refreshing take on the subject that I have read yet. It covers a lot of ground, including soil conditioning, guilds, hugelkulture, food forests, swales, zones, edges, etc. While not a complete reference, it is fairly comprehensive on the practical side of permaculture. On the other hand, it is fun to read because of all the great pictures and drawings. The layout and editing is good, so the information is easy to grasp.
I haven't finished reading it yet, but have read a bunch of it and leafed through the whole thing. There doesn't appear to be a ton of info about using livestock in permaculture, but I don't think that detracts from the book. Honestly, most folks won't be able to have cows or pigs in their permaculture garden anyway, lol. This book is more aimed at urban gardeners I think, or people with an acre or two, but the information can be scaled up to larger farms. I would say it is not a complete guide to permaculture, but the reader will certainly learn enough about the subject to practice it without needing to read other books.
I think this may be one of the best basic guides to permaculture out there. So I would say if you only get one book on permaculture, this is it. I got this book for my wife, who is just getting into gardening and who will absolutely not read Edible Forest Gardens or Sepp Holzer's Permaculture, but I think she will enjoy this book.

This book is a great gift to anyone who gardens. It has top notch photo's and illustrations. The scale of the garden projects in this book are all pertinent to most people's life and budget. The plant selection works in pretty much any climate.
This is the first permaculture book in english, plain english. I've read all the major permaculture books. Pretty much all the permaculture guides, even the good ones focus on large scale land development and use alienating quasi-academic language, even Gaia's Garden supposedly the most accessible permaculture book is not something anyone reads cover to cover. This is.
It's on timber press. They always put out really solid horticulture books.
