The Systems Modeling Language (SysML) extends UML with powerful systems engineering capabilities for modeling a wider spectrum of systems and capturing all aspects of a system’s design.
SysML Distilled is the first clear, concise guide for everyone who wants to start creating effective SysML models.
(Drawing on his pioneering experience at Lockheed Martin and NASA, Lenny Delligatti illuminates SysML’s core components and provides practical advice to help you create good models and good designs. Delligatti begins with an easy-to-understand overview of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and an explanation of how SysML enables effective system specification, analysis, design, optimization, verification, and validation. Next, he shows how to use all nine types of SysML diagrams, even if you have no previous experience with modeling languages. A case study running through the text demonstrates the use of SysML in modeling a complex, real-world sociotechnical system.
Modeled after Martin Fowler’s classic UML Distilled, Delligatti’s indispensable guide quickly teaches you what you need to know to get started and helps you deepen your knowledge incrementally as the need arises. Like SysML itself, the book is method independent and is designed to support whatever processes, procedures, and tools you already use.

I own and learned on A Practical Guide to SysML 2nd Edition (I'll refer to this as FMS), and have access to Systems Engineering with SysML/UML via safari books. I see FMS as a more readable substitute for the actual SysML specification. Systems Engineering with SysML/UML is primarily focused on applying the author's SYSMOD methodology. However, I believe this would be confusing for most users that don't already have a strong foundation in UML/SysML. I'd rate FMS and SysML Distilled as 5/5 stars and Systems Engineering with SysML/UML as 3.5/5 stars in regard to using each as a reference book for SysML. The latter being a bit different in purpose than the first two. I'll describe and compare SysML Distilled and FMS, since these are probably the ones that most people will be looking at.
SysML Distilled seems to fit somewhere in between the two and to me really complements FMS. SysML Distilled is about 1/2 to 1/3 the size of it, and provides some more straight forward guidance and examples that you can quickly reference and use while you are working. While FMS spends more time in the introduction and a description of a simplified version of SysML, SysML Distilled quickly gets to describing each diagram type, and that is the primary focus and organization before finishing up with a chapter on cross-cutting relationships and a desk reference. The topic of SysML Distilled is primarily focused on a space platform example, so if this is your problem space it may be more useful to you, but it is straight forward and descriptive enough to be useful for any domain. The majority of people will find that this book meets all of their needs.
