This is one of the best books I know for Maya beginner, very comprehensive and can stay useful for a long time. Maya has too many functions than you ever need to learn, but this book shows you a clear path you should start off, and explains in details what fundamentals you should cover, and gives lots of details and tips in practical use.
I've read other Maya books, even though those have very fancy projects, a lot of basics and logics behind it were lost and skipped, I always felt so angry after reading them. In this book, you don't just get to know what "button" to press, but why you do it, and what alternatives to do it. I was surprised by how much i got used to using Maya after following through the exercises, as it puts you in a mind set that will later become very helpful for your future projects. Trust me, if you are serious about getting into 3D, this is one of the books you should not miss.

Dariush is clearly an expert of all parts of Maya. To the previous reviewer, I can assure you that not only has Dariush seen Autodesk Maya, he's more of an expert in it than any other author writing about the subject. Unfortunately authors are often limited by their editors in what information they can put in, so not all of his knowledge can be fit into the limited amount of pages that he is allotted.
The author has put in a lot of time and effort keeping everything up to date with new versions of Maya. If you stick with Dariush, the lessons will be consistently updated across the numerous updates.
His examples do a good job of explaining the various facets to beginners, as well as reminding experts of what features are available in maya. Whether you're learning Maya from scratch or just using this as a reference, you're sure to learn a lot. Even if you thought you knew all there was to know.
