There are many ways to die in a hospital…being sick is only one of them.
Chief resident Steve Mitchell is the quintessential surgeon: ambitious, intelligent, confident. Charged with molding a group of medical trainees into doctors, and in line for a coveted job, Steve’s future is bright. But then a patient mysteriously dies, and it quickly becomes clear that a killer is on the loose in his hospital. A killer set on playing a deadly game with Steve. A killer holding information that could ruin his career and marriage. Now, alone and under a cloud of suspicion, Steve must discover a way to outsmart his opponent and save the killer's next victim before the cycle repeats itself again and again…
A chilling and compelling thriller that also takes you into the hospital and details the politics and hierarchy among doctors, as well as the life and death decisions that are made by flawed human beings, Kelly Parsons' Doing Harm marks the gripping debut of a major fiction career.

Steve Mitchell is a doctor at Boston’s prestigious University Hospital. Actually, he’s a chief resident, and has high hopes of moving up next year to teaching at University Medical School. Fortunately, he’s an extraordinarily skilled surgeon, and he’s favoured for the position. There’s just one little hitch: somebody has started killing the patients at the hospital, and Steve knows who’s doing it, but there’s seemingly nothing he can do about it.
“Doing Harm” hinges on the always uncomfortable plot device of having extremely smart people do really, really, stupid things. Sure, even a genius can make a mistake, but Steve works awfully hard to achieve a dizzying level of boneheadedness. Having dug himself into a nice hole via his decisions and associated secrecy, rather than making a mea culpa and accepting some personal setbacks, he presses ahead with even more sneakiness regardless of the certain risk to other patients. Despite being a proficient “hacker” before entering medical school, he makes very little use of those skills. Although the murderer loves to taunt him with confessions and clues, he never thinks of using his cell phone to record their conversations. If you’ve ever watched a slasher flick as the clueless teenager walks into a dark room where the axe murderer awaits, and screamed at the screen, “no – don’t go in there!!” well, you’ll be right at home with this book.
It’s not all bad; in fact, there’s a lot to like here. Written by a surgeon, there’s a strong ring of authenticity to the settings, personalities, and procedures. The suspense level maintains itself pretty well, as does the overall pacing. Steve’s character is very well fleshed out, though the other players get surprisingly little development.
For what it’s worth, DOING HARM is my favorite book so far this year. Kelly Parsons has thrown a monster into a sedate big city hospital, turned it into a killing field, and dragged me kicking and screaming into the melee. A doctor in real life, Dr. Parsons has turned medical practices and their consequences into a nightmare for the protagonist, Chief resident Steve Mitchell. He sees his reputation, his ability as a skilled surgeon, and his relationship with his family turned into a life of absolute horror.
Most readers demand reality in their books and the scenes in DOING HARM are authentic in their presentation. But the storyline veers away from that credibility to the point of being unbelievable; you’ll hardly notice because of the intensity of the writing. When you think about it, great mystery writers such as King, Koontz, and even Hiaasen, don’t try to create realistic stories. Their off the wall plots and unrealistic characters have earned dedicated fans and big bucks. So, while it’s unlikely you’ll ever find an actual person to equal the villain in this story, the idea is fascinating and we need to let Dr. Parsons move with the big boys.
What you will feel is the hopelessness of the protagonist’s situation, his dismay at his indiscretions, his determination to rectify a seemingly impossible predicament, and the absolute resolve he displays to protect his family. As you suffer with Dr. Mitchell, you will join him in the mental and physical environments of a hospital’s operating and board rooms, with stops along the way at its medicine chests. The operating room and emergency care scenes are shockingly recreated to the point of being nauseating.
The author’s characterizations are pragmatic and artfully presented. Dr.
