“It is better than the film … A testament to the glory of the human spirit in triumph over the worst of human abuse.” - Daily Telegraph
"This is no fiction, no exaggeration. If I have failed in anything, it has been in presenting to the reader too prominently the bright side of the picture. I doubt not hundreds have been as unfortunate as myself; that hundreds of free citizens have been kidnapped and sold into slavery, and are at this moment wearing out their lives on plantations..." - Solomon Northup, _Twelve Years a Slave_ Books with free ebook downloads available 12 Years a Slave : Narrative of Solomon Northup, a Citizen of New-York, Kidnapped in Washington City in 1841, and Rescued in 1853 Epub Free

This is the original book, complete with errors in the layout, typographical and punctuation errors. It certainly did not seem exaggerated at all to me If anything it was understated. Of course it had more details than the movie. the movie rearranged and condensed some events (they all do and must because of time constraints) but was surprisingly faithful to the book. If the reader does not mind the flowery language of that time and place or typos I highly recommend it. It is not for the faint of heart, the descriptions are vivid.
By John D. Comegys
The memoir provides vivid detail of a horrific chapter in American history. A much richer story than the recent movie presented.
