Allie Kirkland has always heard the call of her father's unfinished destiny. When she's offered a production assistant's job on a docudrama filming in the hills near Moses Lake, Texas, the dream of following in her director-father's footsteps suddenly seems within reach. The reenactment of the legendary frontier settlement of Wildwood is a first step into the film industry. A summer on set in the wilderness is a small price to pay for a dream.
But in 1861, the real Wildwood held dangerous realities. Town founder Harland Delavan held helpless residents, including young Irish schoolteacher Bonnie Rose, in an iron grip. Mysterious disappearances led to myths and legends still retold in the region's folk songs. Eventually, the entire site was found abandoned.
When filming begins, strange connections surface between Allie and the teacher who disappeared over a century ago, and everyone in Wildwood--including Blake Fulton, Allie's handsome neighbor on the film set--seems to be hiding secrets. Allie doesn't know whom she can trust. If she can't find the answers in time, history may repeat itself...with the most unthinkable results. Wildwood Creek is the 4th book in Lisa Wingate's Moses Lake series. I have read the other books in the series (loved them too!), but the plot of this book does not rely on the previous stories.
I am not an academic or particularly "deep;" I just like what I like. I can relate to the dual plot-lines, current and past, being raised in the "Moses Lake" area, where my ancestors were share croppers and Granny's house had no indoor plumbing.. Lisa does a wonderful job of capturing the essence of historical fact, combining it with the mystery of local legend.
While I consider this work to be Christian Fiction, it is subtle...the author doesn't proselytize. The heroes and heroines are far from perfect; they are guilty of the usual human frailties, but yes, in the end good does overcome evil.

I've read several of Ms. Wingate's books, and this is one of the best. She works hard to be historically accurate - it's obvious she does her research. I like an intelligent author, and she's one of the best. It's written well, flows well, keeps your attention. I'm not all that interested in western history, but she managed to draw me in, and keep my interest. I finished the book of over 300 pages in one day. I also like the fact that she doesn't feel like she needs to fill her books with superfluous stuff that doesn't enhance the story. The story stands on its own because it is so strong and so well written.
