When Others Shuddered: Eight Women Who Refused to Give Up is
the story of eight women called to serve God and who, in doing so, changed the world.
They lived at the turn-of-the-century, rubbing shoulders with the well-known men
of their time like John Rockefeller, Marshall Field, and Dwight Lyman Moody.
Each
of these women was unique. They were single and married, black and white, wealthy
and poor, beautiful and plain, mothers and childless. Yet, each felt called to make
a difference and to do something - to meet a pressing need in her world.
These
women wanted to live lives less ordinary. Their stories inspire us to follow God's
calling in our own lives. They teach us that each individual person can make a difference.
These eight women will show you how God can use your life to change the world.

They prayed with prostitutes. They confronted gangsters. They entered tawdry saloons. In each place, with each person, they sang, preached, celebrated, and applied The Word of God. From the first page, I—a man—wanted to be like these women. But as Jamie says, they were “ordinary,” folks just like me and you. Jamie’s real interest is not simply to tell you their story, but to live their story. Jamie Janosz has given us this, her storied thesis, in her good work When Others Shuddered: Eight Women who Refused to Give Up (Moody, 2014).
I winced as read of life’s difficulties for women like Nettie McCormick. Sacrifice marked the life of Sarah Dunn Clark as she lived with the people she served. We even discover The Spirit of God used Clark’s preaching to bring the famed evangelist Billy Sunday to faith in Christ. The women often worked alone in their respective vocations, whether widowed or single. Amanda Smith stands as a beacon to African-American women everywhere in her tireless service of her Savior. Her commitment to Bible teaching touched not only Chicago but Europe, Africa, and Asia. She reached multitudes with God’s Word and touched the hearts of all who knew her. Virginia Asher figuratively “lit a torch” for others to follow. I personally have a special place in my heart for The Salvation Army and was thrilled to read Evangeline Booth’s story: Booth left a rich legacy serving the poor. Mary Bethune cheered my soul as I read of her deep desire to learn Scripture. Then what a delight to learn she to graced the White House halls (178-79)! Bethune left a Christian influence in the position created for her: Office of Minority Affairs.

When I first heard that Jamie Janosz was writing a book, I was immediately excited to read it. Mrs. Janosz, as I know her, was one of my favorite communications professors in college at Moody Bible Institute. After I learned what the book she was writing, "When Others Shuddered: Eight Women Who Refused to Give Up," was about I knew I had to get a copy to read and review.
Many of us who have grown up in the Christian church know about the great men of our faith. Men who did amazing things for the cause of Christ. But I feel like less of us know about the great women of our faith, who often because of social structures, served behind the scenes. We don't share their stories as much, which is why I treasure this book. It highlights eight ordinary, yet extraordinary, women who had personal relationships with Jesus and because of that, felt drawn to serve and help those around them.
In "When Others Shuddered" we meet Fanny Crosby, Emma Dryer, Nettie McCormick, Sarah Dunn Clarke, Amanda Smith, Virginia Asher, Evangeline Booth, and Mary McLeod Bethune. These women's stories span the mid-1800s to mid-1900s, a time when life was quickly changing America. Many of the featured women had ties to Chicago, which was growing rapidly, as well as experiencing the setback of the Great Chicago Fire.
In each woman's story there is a need which is witnessed and met, whether it's for education, disaster aid, gender equality, or the gospel. Each woman decided in her heart to step into an important, much-needed role, one that involved serving those around her and sharing the love of Jesus.
