An ill wind blows through Alpine, but Advocate publisher Emma Lord and Sheriff Milo Dodge seem immune to the prevailing angst. The newlyweds’ domestic idyll is most definitely over when a dead man is discovered near the fish hatchery and nobody has a clue as to his identity. Vida Runkel may have insight, but Emma’s redoubtable House & Home editor is mad at the world and saying little. Moreover, whispers of scandal travel through the quaint streets when some high school girls mysteriously take a walk on the wild side. And then Milo’s dedicated deputy, Sam Heppner, a true yeoman, suddenly goes AWOL.
What’s happening in Alpine? If Milo knows, he’s not telling Emma. And Emma’s again headed for trouble when she starts snooping. The situation grows even more fraught when a shocking link is revealed between the mystery corpse and one of Alpine’s own, unearthing a long-buried dark secret. Tongues are wagging on Front Street—and the gossip contains an air of menace. Meanwhile, Mary Daheim has written her best book yet.

I love this series and have been following it for several years. Emma Lord owns and manages a small, local newspaper in Alpine, Washington. She is now married to her previously on-again, off-again boyfriend Sheriff Milo Dodge. I’ve always rooted for Emma and Milo as a couple because they bring out the best in each other. They make a great team personally and when working together on an investigation. Although I’m happy to see the couple happily married, Milo now acts like a love-sick teenager around Emma. This is cute, but not totally convincing, and definitely gets old quickly. Emma acts the same as ever, which is a good thing. I enjoy her sharp wit and intelligence and I knew she would get to the bottom of Alpine’s latest crimes.
The mystery in this installment is interesting, but sometimes confusing. I would be okay with that since I normally love the characters. What I like best about the series is catching up with all the various residents of Alpine. Unfortunately, nobody except Emma is acting like themselves. I usually like the opinionated Vida Runkel, Emma’s friend and employee. However, she goes beyond outspoken in this book. The way she treats Emma, along with her antics in this book, make her thoroughly unlikeable. She changed from a basically good, although sometimes difficult person, to someone who is no longer a good employee or a good friend. In fact, all of Emma’s employees seem to be unhappy with their lives. Their bad moods are contagious and as a result, this book just isn’t as much fun as the other installments in the series. Since this is the letter “Y”, I assume the series is about to wrap up. If that’s true, it makes me sad, but it might be time to allow the characters to move on. The books ends somewhat abruptly, so hopefully all of the loose ends will be wrapped up in the next book.

VINE VOICE
Although Emma and the Sheriff Milo are enjoying being newlyweds, things in Alpine are less than blissful. Emma's House and Home editor, Vida, in a foul mood and one of the sheriff's deputies has suddenly left town. Not to mention the mysterious body is found at the fish hatchery and missing high school girls. As Emma and Milo work to solve these puzzling events they are surprised that there is more to these incidents than first believed.
I always enjoy Ms. Daheim's Alpine series and this one did not let me down. It is another wonderful addition to the series. When I read her Alpine books, I feel that I'm visiting old friends in a wonderful small town. Each one in the series just builds on the previous and seem to be getting better each with each title. The characters are well-written and stay true to character book after book. And we should all be thankful that we don't have to draw Vida's family tree.
I hope that Alpine 'Z' won't be the last.
