It's not my first encounter with Victor Cheng - the strategic planning consultant. There are two things I like about this guy:
- He has an 'un-puffy' attitude - he speaks (and writes) in a very down to earth-friendly way, as if he only reminds you of something you've known long ago.
- His knowledge is supported with hands on experience (as apposed to be an academic scholar) so you feel you are being though by a field expert.
Both of these qualities can be found in this book.
I've finished working at Deloitte & Touch over a decade ago but I still remember my interview... I wasn't familiar with Cheng's work then and, although I eventually got the job, I think reading this book would have helped me a lot, at least by lowering my anxiety level.
This book offers a structured analysis of a case interview - from different assessments tools through variety of interview contexts to the different kinds of interviews.
All subjects are dotted with examples which both clarify the ideas and supply the reader with 'mass' that enables field implantation.
The only drawback I've found in this book is that it's a little bit too technical in the sense that it speaks about what one should 'do' and not enough about what should one 'be'. Winning a job is not just about how you act during the interview, it's also about what qualities you bring with you. One of these qualities is 'confrontational ability' - the ability to confront and contain a difficult situation - in the context of Cheng's book the interview - in order to deliver oneself better.
