This book is the ultimate cookbook that will not disappoint, and has become the elite of my cookbook collection. There is much more offered in this inspiring cookbook, than one can possibly imagine. For starters, there are Main Dishes, Sides & More, and Sweets. This cookbook offers delicious recipes from across the nation, with stunning, colorful photos of not only prepared meals, but also special places across the nation. We go on an exciting tour of flavor from the Northeast, as we select incredible recipes from different states. We can select BLUEBERRY and CRANBERRY DELIGHTS, SUB SANDWICHES, CLAMBAKES, and much more. Several recipes are simple to prepare, and provide cooking time, as well as the number of servings. We can choose MAINE LOBSTERS from New Jersey or HOT DOGS, and there are different tastes that will indeed satisfy everyone's cravings, such as PIZZA from New York. There are recipes for BLUECRAB from Maryland, ANTIPASTO SUB from New York, or BEEF STEW with Sesame SEED BISCUITS. In addition: there are recipes from famous restaurants, recipes for breakfast, and recipes for appetizers, as well as a variety of salad dressings. My daughter has selected the ANTIPASTO SUB from New York to prepare for Monday's dinner. An update: The ANTIPASTO SUBS were delicious, and I will be making them again.
As a long time fan of taste of home, I was looking forward to reviewing this large cookbook. The book is separated first by region (Northeast, South, Midwest, Southwest, West), and then further separated within each region by main dishes, sides, and sweets. I enjoyed this grouping and feel it makes the cookbook more interesting than if it had simply been grouped by food type/entree. Furthermore, it has an extensive index that is categorized both by ingredient, and also by dish type (appetizer, beverage, etc.).
I must say I missed the stories from contributors that you see in their magazine, but I enjoyed the short tidbits TOH included about customs, festivals, etc. from various locations. The photography was well done with a picture being included of almost, but not every, recipe. There is no nutritional information included, should the exact analysis be important to you (it's not for me).
The recipes are varied in complexity, ranging from a super simple mayo and tomato sandwich to a complicated lobster stuffed beef wellington. There is literally something for every skill level or time commitment. There are also wild game recipes scattered throughout the cookbook which is a plus.
Growing up in the south (NC and FL), I must say I did not find the recipe collection representative or accurate at all for the main dishes of this region, relative to my own experiences. There is a very heavy focus on Cajun, Cuban, and whiskey based recipes. On the other hand, I found the Southwest region recipes to be spot on. Having lived in TX for about a decade, I recognized many of the recipes as local fare.
Overall, this book is a keeper. I found a few minor typos, though I reviewed an ARC edition.
