Can guys and girls really be just friends? Levi and Macallan met in seventh grade and bonded over their shared love of a British TV show. Throughout the years, they’ve seen themselves as buddies and nothing more, even if everyone else has seen them as a couple. Sure, Levi might spend more time with Macallan than his girlfriend, and, yes, Macallan might share more jokes with Levi than her boyfriend—but they’re better off this way, right? Or is there something more that they just don’t see? While the ending may be predictable, the journey here allows for a pitch-perfect rom-com. With a nod to When Harry Met Sally, rising YA romance writer Eulberg (Prom & Prejudice, 2011) situates relatable characters in realistic situations. There’s depth, too, as Macallan grieves over the loss of her mother and Levi struggles to remain “one of the guys.” A humorous and cozy story about friendships and relationships, and the oh-so-fine line between them. Grades 7-10. --Sarah Bean Thompson

What a super cute book! And finally, FINALLY, a YA book where the best friends fall in love ... eventually. This book is told in dual 1st person POV, going from Macallan to Levi and back again. I really did appreciate the change in font that was used to point out exactly who was telling the story, but even without that visual reminder the voices between the two main characters was distinctive enough to show that two different people were telling the story.
Macallan and Levi are best friends ... super, duper best friends who know every little detail about each other, finish each other's sentences, know each other's jokes, can read each other's facial expressions. They are great friends. I loved reading about the evolution of this friendship. It is an odd one in a world where girls and guys generally are not best friends unless they are also boyfriend/girlfriend as well. But Macallan and Levi seem to push against that trend, maintaining their friendship even as the two of them date other people off and on.
But things get complicated when they start to realize that maybe they do have a bit deeper feelings for one another. Unfortunately they never seem to realize this at the same time. Their timing was totally atrocious. As soon as it seemed like one would be ready to reveal everything, the other would be happily (sort of) announcing their newest relationship. They dealt with fear of rejection, fear of losing the good friendship they had, fear of the unknown. And it could be a bit frustrating to read at times. You really did just want to reach in the book, grab both of them, and demand that they TALK about their feelings with each other, no matter what. Good grief!
After reading a plethora of books with the insta-love factor and absentee parents in them it is so nice to take a step back and read a book where you watch the relationship between two people grow over years. Levi and Macallan met in the eighth grade and became fast friends. The way they talk to one another is fun easy banter of people who really know each other inside out.
-- ”So, Carrie, I think we need to intervene before the Levi and Macallan Show takes over. Once they get started they don’t stop. Ever.”
Throughout the next few years, multiple relationships and a double date that didn’t end well for either it becomes more and more clear that no matter who comes into their lives it just never seems to complete with the relationship they share. Maybe everyone around them is right and there is more to them than just the friendship. But how do you transition?
-- "Just so we are remembering this correctly: When you kissed me I went home and splashed cold water on my face. When I tried to kiss you, you ran away to Ireland for the summer."
I really like the writing style this book presented with the alternating POV of Macallan and Levi. Both make plenty of mistakes along the way in their friendship and sure there is a little drama but at the beginning of every chapter there is a dialog between the now Macallan and Levi about the story they are telling. The beginning chapter banter is funny and indicates no matter the journey to get there the destination seems quite clear.
I was completely drawn into their story and laughed a lot along the way. Levi and Macallan are likable and even when they were being stupid I still rooted for them to figure it all out.
