Reporting on a commercial flight where everyone aboard lost their memories, a young journalist stumbles onto a much bigger story, the topsecret Mind Management program. Her ensuing journey involves weaponized psychics, hypnotic advertising, talking dolphins, and seemingly immortal pursuers, as she attempts to find the flight’s missing passenger, the man who was MIND MGMT’s greatest success—and its most devastating failure. But in a world where people can rewrite reality itself, can she trust anything she sees? Collects MIND MGMT #1#6.

Mind MGMT Volume 1 was an exceedingly compelling read. It was recommended to me by a friend who knows I'm a big fan of the X-Files and its various progeny, e.g. Lost, Fringe, et all (the kindle version I purchased even had a forward by a writer for Lost).
The story concerns an amnesiac true crime writer chasing a lead for a new book, involving an ill-fated airline flight on which every passenger suddenly lost his memory. She (obviously) discovers that between government spies, a frightening pair of implacable assassins, and a "missing link" survivor who's not all he appears to be, she's bitten off more than she can chew. The book is so remarkable not for its premise, which is mostly old hat, but for its fresh and stylish execution. I rated this title five stars for a few reasons:
1. The concept of being in a dream with a twist ending is served strongly by the gorgeous watercolor-style artwork. The often-obscure frames had me flipping back and forth fervently to try and figure out if there was something subtle that I'd missed (often the case).
2. There is almost no wasted space whatsoever on all 202 pages. Everything serves to advance the story or the tone in some way out another, from the most seemingly-innocuous line of dialogue to the funky, surreal "instructions" in the margins. The pace moves along at a steady clip and avoids being ponderous or self-indulgent.
3. The story is genuinely engaging. A fresh story in the government conspiracy/cover-up genre can be hard to come by these days; Kindt serves up some genuinely surprising and satisfying twists and turns, none of which feel tracked on or cheap.
