After carving a place for itself in war-torn 17th century Europe, citizens of the modern town of Grantville, West Virginia, the up-timers and their allies take on continental America and the Japan!
A cosmic catastrophe, the Ring of Fire, strands the West Virginia town of Grantville in the middle of Europe during the Thirty Years War. The repercussions of that event transform Europe and, in a few years, begin spreading across the world. By 1636, the Ring of Fire's impact is felt across two great oceans, the Atlantic and Pacific.
Stretching Out: The United States of Europe seeks out resources -- oil, rubber and even aluminum ore -- to help it wage war against the foes of freedom. Daring pioneers cross the Atlantic and found a new colony on the Wild Coast of South America. The colonists hope that with the up-timers' support and knowledge they can prosper in the tropics without resort to Indian and African slavery. Then a slave ship visits the colony, seeking water.... and the colonists must make a fateful choice.
Rising Sun: In 1633, the wave of change emanating from the Ring of Fire reaches Japan. The Shogun is intrigued by samples of up-time technology, but it's a peek at what fate had in store for Japan in the old time line that has the greatest impact -- setting events in motion whose tremors are felt thousands of miles away and for years to come, as Japan pulls back from a policy of isolation and stakes out its own claim in the brave new world created by the Ring.

None of the people in Eric Flint's ecosystem come close to him in talent. Yet another who needs a good editor and a lot more practice to be ready for prime time. Little character development or real interest generated in the protagonists. I'm not happy I spent the money for this mediocre effort.

The author, Iver Cooper, describes this book as a ‘braid’ rather a novel or a set of short stories... and he’s right. This book is neither is unusual. It’s linked and intertwined stories that carry interlocking themes. Remember the Butterfly Effect? Well these wings are beating very nicely!
The first part: 'Stretching Out' contains seven intertwined stores set in South America and the Caribbean where explorers from Europe are seeking the raw materials that Grantville and the new Europe will need to continue expanding. And, although Grantville and the Ring of Fire are mentioned, these stories are more about the people who are seeking the wonders and changes that Grantville represents. The characters are well developed, the situations intriguing and the “what if’s” this version of history brings are interesting to say the least.
The second part: 'Rising Sun' has five stories that are a fascinating foray into the Japan of 1632—part of the wave of change that’s roaring out of the Ring of Fire. And Mr. Cooper’s twists in Japanese and Western American history are thought provoking. Imagine California settled by Japanese Christians rather than the Spanish... and knowing where the California Gold Rush would occur! Fascinating...
This is Iver Cooper’s first book of fiction but not his first foray into the world of the Ring of Fire. He’s written short stories and articles for the Grantville Gazette for some time and had a short story in the Ring of Fire Anthology II.
I really enjoyed reading this ebook! I found the characters well written and, except for the evil ones, likeable. I love most alternate reality/history explorations and have read every Ring of Fire book. This one goes onto my re-readable list... And, if you’re wondering, I frequently buy Baen Books monthly ebook bundle and this book was in the January bundle.
